Research Project «TED2021-131763A-I00 MODELIZACIÓN SEMIPARAMETRIC MODELING OF THE ENVIRONMENTAL REGULATION, COMPETITIVENESS AND INNOVATION», financed by MICIU/AEI/10.13039//501100011033 and by the European Union NextGenerationEU/ PRTR

About the project

The project «Semiparametric Modeling of Environmental Regulation, Competitiveness, and Innovation» addresses one of the most pressing challenges our time: how to design effective environmental policies that enable the transition toward a carbon-neutral economy without compromising business competitiveness or innovation capacity.

The research is structured around two main areas: the analysis of environmental policies at the national level, including the impact of the European Union Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) on CO2 emmisions, energy intensity, and countries’ innovation capacity, and at the firm level, evaluating Porter’s Hypothesis on the relationship between environmental regulation, competitiveness, and innovation, as well as the phenomenon of carbon leakage.

The main innovation of the project lies in the development of new semiparametric estimation techniques that address fundamental methodological challenges such as nonlinearity among variables, parameter heterogeneity, cross-sectional dependence, and sample selection bias. These methodological advances will provide more accurate tools for policymakers to design environmental strategies compatible with sustainable economic growth and the objectives of the European Green Deal, thereby helping to safeguard natural resources for future generations.
